Sport at John Grant School
John Grant School is fully committed to PE and Sport and we work hard to ensure that all pupils in school receive a wide variety of sports experiences, including weekly PE and swimming lessons.
At John Grant School, we are very proud of our sports provision and extensive facilities.
We offer fully inclusive sports opportunities, including dance, curling, yoga, gymnastics, tennis and many more, so pupils are given a wide range of experiences to ensure their diverse needs are met. The PE curriculum map ensures that sports are introduced appropriately as students progress through the key stages, and build on prior learning.
Students participate in weekly swimming lessons in our on-site swimming pool, and weekly PE lessons utilising our sports hall, dance studio and gymnasium. Primary pupils have the opportunity for horse riding lessons at a local riding school.
The school's physios and PE team, work closely together to deliver personalised physiotherapy treatment plans to meet the needs of specific students. These are delivered weekly in our on-site hydrotherapy swimming pool and during specialised rebound therapy sessions using the school's trampolines.
The school actively participates in a range of sporting events locally and regionally against other special education schools. These include competitions in a wide range of sports including table football, boccia, cricket, basketball, athletics, ASD gymnastics and various multi-sports events.
Lunchtime clubs run from 12-12.45 pm for Secondary and FE pupils, and 12.45-1.30 pm for Primary Pupils. These include; a fitness club, badminton club, hockey club, multi-sports club, table cricket club and music club. We aim to change the sports on offer each term, to offer pupils new experiences.
John Grant School has a sports house system, which gives students of all ages the opportunity to work together, creating a truly cohesive environment and ensuring that age and ability are not a barrier to friendship and collaboration. For every PE and swimming lesson, a student is awarded a star of the lesson for their efforts or achievement. At the end of every half term, house games and competitions are held where further stars can be achieved. These stars are then added to Sports Day performances and awards, where parents and careers are invited to share in the celebrations.
The PE department has organised numerous fundraising events, including for Comic Relief, where pupils have taken part in beat-the-teacher events and swimming galas against other classes. We hope to continue this each year.
